Choosing a family location sharing app

A good family location app answers "did they get home safely?" without turning into a record of everywhere everyone has been. The difference between apps is mostly in what they collect, who can see it, and how easily you can turn it off.

What to look for

Control per group. Sharing your location with your partner is different from sharing it with a group of friends. The best apps let you decide group by group, not with one switch for everyone.

Arrival alerts without a trail. "Mum arrived home" is what most families actually want. It should not require uploading every location you pass through all day.

Real deletion. Turning sharing off should delete your position, not just hide it, and leaving a group should stop everything for that group at once.

Questions to ask of any app

Does it sell or share location data with advertisers or data brokers? Does it run advertising or analytics on your location? How long does it keep your history? Can the people in your group see your full trail or only where you are now?

Location data reveals where you live, work, worship and sleep. An app that makes money from it has a reason to keep as much as possible for as long as possible.

How Odomint Circles works

A Circle is a small group: family, a household, friends. Sharing is off by default and switched on one Circle at a time: live location, finished drives and driving stats are each separate choices.

Arrival alerts for places like home and school are checked on your own phone. Only the fact that someone arrived or left is shared, with the name you gave the place, never its coordinates. Turning sharing off deletes what was shared, and Odomint does not sell your data to anyone.

Cars as well as people

Circles were built around cars as much as people: share a car into a Circle and everyone can see when its MOT and tax are due. It is the easiest way to know a parent’s or teenager’s car is legal without having to ask.

Teenagers and new drivers

For a newly qualified driver, an arrival alert at home or work is usually all a parent needs, and it is far less intrusive than watching every journey live. Agreeing together what will be shared, and why, makes it a safety net rather than surveillance.

Sharing the car itself into a Circle is often more useful still: everyone can see when its MOT and tax are due, so a young driver is not caught out by a date they did not know about. Keep the conversation open, and make sure everyone knows how to switch sharing off.

Common questions

Can I share my location with family only some of the time?

In Odomint, yes. Sharing is switched on per Circle and can be turned off at any time, which deletes your shared position.

Do arrival alerts share my exact location?

Not in Odomint. Arrivals are checked on your phone, and only the event and the name you chose for the place are shared, never its coordinates.

Does Odomint sell location data?

No. Odomint does not sell data to anyone, and runs no advertising or third-party analytics.
