Check the car before you hand over the money

About 1 in 7 used cars on sale still has finance owing on it. If you buy one, the lender can take the car, and you have still paid for it.

Coming to Odomint. Pricing will be shown in the app.

An example check. It opens on the answer, not on a table of specifications.

What the check covers

Outstanding finance

Whether money is still owed against the vehicle. This is the single field people buy a check for, and the one that costs the most to get wrong.

Data provided by Experian

Insurance write-off

Whether the car has been written off, which category, and when, and what that category actually means. "Cat S" on its own is frightening without being useful; we explain what was damaged, what it does to the value, and what to ask the seller for.

Data provided by Experian

Stolen

Whether the vehicle is currently recorded as stolen on the Police National Computer.

Data provided by Experian

Identity, keepers and plate changes

That the VIN matches the registration, how many keepers the car has had and when it changed hands, and any registration transfers, which are sometimes used to put distance between a car and its history.

Data provided by Experian

Salvage auction history

Whether the vehicle has appeared in a salvage auction, when, where, and the damage recorded at the time. This often corroborates a write-off, and occasionally turns up on a car with no write-off recorded at all, which is worth asking about.

Data provided by Experian

Colour changes

Every recorded change of colour, and what the car was before. A resprayed car is usually innocent; one resprayed shortly after a change of keeper is a question worth asking.

Data provided by Experian

Scrapped, exported and imported markers

Whether the vehicle has been scrapped, issued a certificate of destruction, exported, or imported, and when. A car being driven while recorded as scrapped is the clearest do-not-buy there is.

Mileage over time, and the full MOT record

Every MOT since 2005 carries an odometer reading. Odomint plots them, so a reading that goes backwards or jumps implausibly is visible at a glance rather than buried in a table. You also get every test and every advisory.

The data guarantee

Reports include an Experian data guarantee of up to £10,000 for 12 months from the date of the check. The guarantee is Experian's, not Odomint's, given by Experian directly to you on their terms.

What it covers, and the conditions a claim has to meet, are set out in Experian's own terms, including that the check must be bought before you buy the vehicle. Read them before you rely on it: Experian Data Guarantee terms and conditions.

We show the conditions alongside the report as well, rather than leaving you to find them out at the point of claiming. If you do need to claim, contact us and we will provide your stored report and the claim route.

What a check is, and what it is not

A report records what those sources held at the moment it was produced, and every report shows that time. Finance can be registered against a vehicle after a check has been run. It is information to help you decide, not advice on whether to buy, and not a substitute for inspecting the car or having a mechanic look at it.
