How early can you get an MOT?

You can have an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the current certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date. Test earlier than that and the new certificate runs from the day of the test, so you lose the overlap.

How the date works

If your MOT expires on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep 15 May as the renewal date is 16 April. Pass on that day and the new certificate runs to 15 May next year. You have effectively got up to thirteen months.

You can legally test a car at any time; there is no rule against an MOT three months early. It just means the new certificate starts from the test date, and you lose the time left on the old one.

Why testing early is the smart move

If the car fails, the old certificate is still valid. You can drive it (as long as no defect is dangerous) while you get quotes and book the repair, instead of having a car you cannot legally use while you wait for parts.

Garages are busiest at the end of the month and in spring, when cars registered in March come up for their MOT. Booking a few weeks ahead gets you a slot when you want one.

Is there a grace period?

No. There is no grace period after an MOT expires. From the day after, the car can only be driven to a pre-booked test or to a repair arranged after a fail. Driving it otherwise risks a fine of up to £1,000, and an expired MOT can also cause problems with an insurance claim.

Let the app count the days

Odomint knows the expiry date from the DVSA record and reminds you as the one-month window opens, so you can book on the earliest day that keeps your date.

What to bring and how long it takes

You do not need to bring the V5C or the old certificate: the tester looks the car up on the national database. Bring the locking wheel nut key if your car has one, and make sure the car is clean enough for the tester to see the number plates and lights.

The test itself usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Many garages ask you to leave the car for the morning, particularly if they will quote for any repairs. The result is recorded on the MOT history straight away, so you can check it online before you collect the car.

Common questions

Can I MOT my car two months early?

Yes, but the new certificate will run from the date of the test, so you lose the time left on the old one. Up to a month minus a day early keeps the same renewal date.

Is there a grace period for an expired MOT?

No. Once it expires, the car may only be driven to a pre-booked MOT or to repairs after a failed test.

What happens if my car fails an early MOT?

The old certificate remains valid until it expires, so you can usually keep driving while you arrange repairs, unless a defect is dangerous.
