What is a Cat C car?

Cat C was a write-off category used until October 2017. It meant repairing the car would cost more than it was worth, so the insurer paid out instead. The car could still be repaired and driven, and many were.

What Cat C meant

The old system sorted repairable write-offs by money, not by damage. Cat C meant the repair bill was bigger than the car’s value. Nothing about the letter tells you whether the damage was structural.

That is the important difference from today’s Cat S. A Cat C car might have had a bent chassis, or it might have been a low-value car with expensive but cosmetic damage.

Is a Cat C car safe?

It can be. What matters is what was damaged and who repaired it, and both are questions the letter cannot answer.

For several years Cat C cars had to pass a Vehicle Identity Check before going back on the road. That scheme ended in 2015, so a repaired Cat C car today has had nothing beyond its MOTs, which do not inspect the quality of a structural repair.

What it does to the price

Cat C cars are now at least nine years old, so the discount matters less in pounds than it once did. Expect them to sell for noticeably less than the same car with a clean record, and to be harder to sell on.

Some insurers decline older write-offs or load the premium. Get a quote on the actual registration before you pay anything.

What to ask the seller

What was damaged? A specific answer is worth more than any discount.

Who repaired it, and are there invoices? On a car this old they are often lost, which is itself useful to know.

How has it done at its MOTs since? Repeated advisories for corrosion or uneven tyre wear on one side can point to a repair that did not settle.

Checking a car for Cat C

A vehicle history check shows the old categories as well as the new ones, with the date they were recorded.

An Odomint Check shows the category, explains it, and includes every MOT and advisory since the car was new, which is how you see the years after the write-off.

Common questions

Is Cat C worse than Cat D?

In money terms, yes: Cat C meant the repair cost more than the car was worth, Cat D that it cost less. Neither letter says whether the damage was structural.

Did Cat C cars become Cat S?

No. Cars written off before October 2017 keep their original category. Cat S is only given to cars written off since then.

Can you insure a Cat C car?

Usually, though some insurers decline write-offs or charge more. Get a quote on the specific registration before buying.
