What is a Cat D car?
Cat D was the lightest write-off category before October 2017. Repairing the car would have cost less than it was worth, but the insurer chose to pay out rather than repair it. It can be driven like any other car once repaired.

Why a repairable car was written off
A claim costs an insurer more than the repair: a hire car for weeks, storage, admin. When those costs pushed the total past what the car was worth, writing it off was cheaper even though the repair itself was not.
So Cat D often meant modest damage on a modest car. Often, not always: the letter was about cost, and it says nothing about whether the structure was involved.
Cat D is not the same as Cat N
People treat Cat N as the new name for Cat D. It is not. Cat N means the damage was not structural. A Cat D car could have had structural damage that happened to be cheap to fix.
Cars written off as Cat D before October 2017 keep that letter.
Is it worth buying?
A well repaired Cat D car can be a sensible buy at the right price. It will sell for less than a clean-record equivalent, and it will be worth less when you sell it, so the saving is only yours if you keep it.
Ask what was damaged, ask for invoices, and look at the MOT history since the write-off. A car that has passed year after year with nothing unusual is telling you something good.
Insurance
Most insurers cover Cat D cars, sometimes at a higher price. Quote on the actual registration before you buy, and remember any future payout will reflect its write-off value.
Reading the MOT history after a write-off
Find the date of the write-off, then read every MOT after it. A clean run of passes with sensible mileage each year is the best evidence you will get that the repair was sound.
Advisories that keep coming back on one corner of the car (uneven tyre wear, suspension joints, corrosion near a seam) are the opposite, and worth asking about before you go any further.
Finding out before you buy
A vehicle history check shows Cat D alongside the newer categories, with the date it was recorded.
An Odomint Check explains what the category means, shows the date, and includes the full MOT history free.
Common questions
Is Cat D the same as Cat N?
No. Cat D described a repair that cost less than the car was worth. Cat N describes non-structural damage. A Cat D car could have had structural damage.
Is a Cat D car safe to drive?
Usually, if it was repaired properly. Ask what was damaged and for the repair invoices, and read the MOT history since the write-off.
How much less is a Cat D car worth?
It depends on the car and the repair, but expect it to sell for less than a clean-record equivalent, and to sell for less again when you come to sell it.
