When does a new car need its first MOT?
In England, Scotland and Wales a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. In Northern Ireland it is four years. After that, it needs one every year.

The third anniversary, not the third birthday you remember
The date that matters is the date of first registration on the V5C, not the date you bought the car or collected it. A car registered on 1 March 2023 needs its first MOT by 1 March 2026, even if you bought it in June.
This is the MOT most often missed. A new car comes with no certificate and no reminder from a previous test, and three years is long enough to forget. Many people only find out when their insurer, a police check or an ANPR camera does it for them.
Booking it early
You can have the first MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the deadline and the next one will still be due on the anniversary. There is no benefit to leaving it to the last day and a real risk if it fails and needs parts.
Is a new car likely to fail?
Less likely, but not unlikely. Three years of wear is enough for tyres, wiper blades and brake pads, and a missed recall or a warning light can fail a nearly new car. A car that has done high mileage in its first three years should be treated like any other.
Never miss the first one
Add the car to Odomint and it reads the registration date from the DVLA, works out when the first MOT is due, and reminds you in good time, the same as every MOT and tax date after it.
Imported and used cars
For an imported car, the first MOT is due three years after it was first registered anywhere in the world, not three years after it was registered in the UK. A car first registered abroad in 2021 and brought to the UK in 2024 needs an MOT straight away if it is past its third anniversary.
If you have bought a car that is two to three years old, check the first registration date on the V5C rather than assuming the dealer will remind you. The first MOT is the one most likely to slip through the gap between owners.
Common questions
Does a 3-year-old car need an MOT?
Yes. In Great Britain a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its first registration, and every year after that.
Is the first MOT different in Northern Ireland?
Yes. In Northern Ireland a car’s first MOT is due four years after first registration.
Does the dealer remind me about the first MOT?
Not reliably. With no previous certificate there is no automatic reminder, which is why the first MOT is the one most often missed.
